In celebration of IDAHOT on May 17, the U.S. Embassy Rangoon hosted an LGBT awareness event

In celebration of the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia (#IDAHOT) on May 17, the U.S. Embassy hosted an LGBT awareness event organized by the local LGBT network Colors Rainbow to promote equal rights and freedom of expression, featuring a panel discussion, video clips, and LGBT-themed book display. The Myanmar Commissioner for Human Rights, as well as nearly 100 students, LGBT rights activists, and several members of the international diplomatic community attended the event. The five panelists, representing civil society organizations supporting LGBT rights, spoke openly about the personal, social, and medical challenges faced by the LGBT community and how open dialogue can successfully promote greater awareness that LGBT rights are increasingly being viewed as human rights in Myanmar.
