U.S. Visit to Kawrgowsk Refugee Camp in Iraq

U.S. Consulate in Erbil - U.S. Department of State

During his September 18 visit to the Kawrgowsk refugee camp near Erbil, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Iraq Brett McGurk outlined continued U.S. assistance in supporting Syrian refugees, noting the United States has provided more than 45.6 million dollars in humanitarian assistance to Syrian refugees in Iraq. Deputy Assistant Secretary McGurk met with local officials, UNHCR representatives, and NGO implementers to discuss ongoing relief efforts at the camp. He also toured the camp facilities and met with Syrian refugee families.

Deputy Assistant Secretary of State McGurk expressed appreciation for the ongoing efforts by the Kurdistan Regional Government in opening the border and its generous efforts in providing humanitarian assistance to well over 220,000 Syrian refugees, adding: “We stand side-by-side with the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Government of Iraq, as well as other countries in the region, in the overall effort to provide protection, assistance, and hospitality to over two million refugees who have fled the violence inside Syria.”

With new contributions pledged in August, U.S. humanitarian assistance for the Syria crisis now stands at over 1 billion dollars, including more than 45 million dollars for humanitarian assistance to Syrian refugees in Iraq. These contributions support camp construction and much-needed relief assistance, education for children, health and sanitation services, and protection programs, among other services, for those who have fled the conflict in Syria.
