U.S. Statement on the Appeal of Liu Hui

U.S. Department of State

The United States is deeply disappointed that a Chinese appellate court has upheld the 11-year prison sentence for Liu Hui, brother-in-law of jailed Nobel laureate and imprisoned democracy activist Liu Xiaobo, on charges stemming from a disputed land deal.

As the United States has previously stated, we remain deeply concerned over attempts to control or silence activists by targeting family members and associates of activists, and the Secretary has raised this issue with his counterparts. Such actions are inconsistent with Chinese law and China’s international human rights commitments.
