Consulate Shenyang and Local Partners Fly the Rainbow Flag across Northeast China

The Northeast China Pride Festival has quickly grown to become one of the largest in China since it was first held in 2011. The U.S. Consulate in Shenyang has collaborated with local LGBT groups to organize the annual festival since its inception. This year’s festival theme was “Flying the Rainbow Flag,” and for the first time, organizers took photos of participants proudly flying the most recognized of LGBT symbols at major public sites in five of northeast China’s major cities. In May and June 2013, members of the LGBT community, their family members, and supporters participated in a series of discussions, roundtables, and workshops in cities throughout Liaoning and Jilin provinces. Mr. Sean Stein, Consul General from the U.S. Consulate in Shenyang gave remarks at the festival’s opening and closing ceremonies to demonstrate the U.S. Consulate’s support for the LGBT community.
