Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Michael Posner met with a group of Russian bloggers and civic activists on May 14, 2012. The group shared their views on recent developments in the Russian democracy and civil society, including the recent protests, the new electoral reforms, developments in local-level politics, and the challenges facing newly formed parties. Assistant Secretary Posner reaffirmed that the United States supports as a strong and democratic Russia, because a strong and democratic Russia would be the best partner for the United States on a range of matters of global importance. He noted that the recent increase in civic activism around the country is an encouraging development for reform and democracy in Russia. He also emphasized that while the United States supports an open, democratic political process in Russia, we do not support any particular party, candidate, or electoral outcome.
