Excerpt from December 29 Press Briefing by State Department Spokesperson Victoria Nuland on Raiding of NGOs in Egypt

Washington, DC

The United States is deeply concerned that Egyptian judicial and police officials raided the offices of a number of nongovernmental organizations today, including the National Democratic Institute and the International Republican Institute. This action is inconsistent with the bilateral cooperation we have had over many years. We have been in touch with the American NGOs and with the Government of Egypt at high levels.

Ambassador Patterson is actively following up with Egyptian Prime Minister Ganzouri to obtain more information. Assistant Secretary Feltman has also spoken with the Egyptian Embassy in Washington. We call on the Egyptian government to resolve this issue immediately and to end harassment of NGO staff as well as return all property.
