Statement by U.S. Embassy Suva on the Lifting of the Public Emergency Regulations in Fiji

Suva, Fiji

The United States welcomes the recent announcement by the Government of Fiji that it will lift the Public Emergency Regulations (PER) on January 7th.

In concert with our regional partners, we have consistently called for the lifting of the PER as a critical step towards the holding of free, fair, and fully transparent elections.

The United States also welcomes the government’s announcement of a February start to public consultations on a new constitution. We look forward to an open and inclusive consultative dialogue leading to the creation of constitutional processes guaranteeing the rights and institutional framework required for truly democratic elections.
